How the day is chosen

Poila Boishakh is the first day of the Bengali year, 1 Boishakh. The sankranti is the moment the Sun enters Mesha (Aries, sidereal). By the West Bengal rule, a sankranti between sunrise and midnight starts the month the next day; one after midnight, the day after that. The day before is Chaitra Sankranti, the day of Charak Puja.

Traditional (Surya Siddhanta) panjikas, such as Gupta Press and Beni Madhab Sil, can differ in tithi times by hours, so in some years the day differs too. Their dates will appear here side by side once that school has been checked against a full printed year.

Tithi times are for Kolkata, in Indian Standard Time. Panjikas give Kolkata’s festival days for all of West Bengal. Why another panjika may differ
