How the day is chosen

Kali Puja is on the night of the Amavasya of Ashwin (Kartik where months end at the full moon): the day whose midnight holds the Amavasya; if both or neither do, the later. Dipaboli goes by the same Amavasya’s evening, so in some years it is the day after Kali Puja. Dhanteras is on the evening of the Krishna Trayodashi before it.

Traditional (Surya Siddhanta) panjikas, such as Gupta Press and Beni Madhab Sil, can differ in tithi times by hours, so in some years the day differs too. Their dates will appear here side by side once that school has been checked against a full printed year.

Tithi times are for Kolkata, in Indian Standard Time. Panjikas give Kolkata’s festival days for all of West Bengal. Why another panjika may differ
